Punjab Free Smartphone Scheme or Captain Smart Connect Scheme 2021 is a new scheme of Punjab state government which has been announced by the government to provide 50 lakh free smartphones to the students of class 11th and 12th. Under the Captain Smart Connect Scheme, the government is providing free smartphones with free 4G data for one year to the eligible youth.
The free smartphone scheme was announced in Punjab in the 2016 election manifesto but was not launched immediately. However, there have been many changes in the eligibility criteria and implementation of this scheme, now in August 2020, the state government has finally launched the free smartphone scheme in the state and distributed smartphones to the students. Captain Smart Connect Free Smartphone Scheme Phase 1
After waiting for more than 3 years, Captain Smart Connect Free Smartphone Scheme has been launched and in the first phase of this scheme, smartphones have been distributed to girl students.
On 28th July 2020, Punjab Government CM Captain Amarinder Singh has decided to launch the first phase of Free Smartphone Distribution Scheme. In this first phase, the government provided around 50,000 smartphones to the students who are studying in the 11th or 12th standard of the school. All students must submit a self-certification form. This form will ensure that the young beneficiaries of the scheme are not already in possession of a smartphone and they really need it.
A total of 1,74,015 class XII students of government schools are expected to benefit from the Punjab Mukt Smartphone Yojana in the first phase. The first phase of Kaptan Smart Connect scheme has been completed by November 2020.
Punjab Free Smartphone Yojana Phase 2
Punjab Chief Minister Captain Amarinder Singh has launched the second phase of Punjab Free Smart Phone Scheme through virtual mode on 18th December 2020. The government will provide seamless e-learning facility to the students with free smartphones. Around 80,000 students of government schools who are studying in Class 12 have been identified in the Smartphone Scheme Phase 2 amid the COVID-19 pandemic.
Under the Captain Smart Connect Scheme, smartphones were distributed in 845 schools by various ministers, MLAs and other dignitaries across the state. In addition, 877 tablets were provided to the students of 22 senior secondary schools. Smartphones and tablets will equip students to meet the challenges of education in times of pandemic.
According to reports, the Punjab government is spending Rs 87.84 crore on the free mobile project. A target of 1,75,443 students including 88059 boys and 87284 girls has been set as beneficiaries. During the first phase, 50000 students have already been facilitated with the scheme. The remaining 45,443 students are expected to be provided with smartphones by the end of December.

The school administration or board will provide the list of all eligible students to the concerned department and will buy the smartphone from the company which will later be distributed to the students.
