Nav Tejaswini Yojana was approved by Maharashtra cabinet on 7 October 2020. For this purpose, the International Funds for Agriculture Development (IFAD) will provide a grant of Rs 333 crore and the state government will provide an amount of 190 crore. This grant is for the establishment and support of rural women entrepreneurship.

In order to empower women financially through SHG movement, Maharashtra cabinet minister Yashomati Thakur said that SHG movement in rural areas is being run strictly through MAVIM. “However, since women did not own property, they were not part of any formal banking system as free persons to seek loans. Currently, loans are provided through SHGs, but the loan amount is small and is sanctioned to SHGs and not to women members independently.
Adding to this, the minister said that even though women are capable and trained for industry or entrepreneurship, they still face the difficulties of sanctioning loans for setting up businesses, small enterprises and producing goods among others. “Therefore, to overcome that, “Nav Tejaswini – Maharashtra Rural Women Empowerment Development Initiative” will prove to be revolutionary. He said that the emphasis would be on providing personal loans to the women of self-help group “Bachat Gat” and the bank.

Under the Vikel to Pikel initiative under the Nav Tejaswini Yojana, the Government of Maharashtra aims to uplift SHGs to the next level. This will be done by introducing methods like setting up their cooperative societies, federations and companies. Emphasizing on local requirement, productivity and demand, the Vikel to Pikel scheme will focus on procuring products from SHGs.
