The Khadi Agarbatti Atmanirbhar Mission has been approved by the Central Government. Union Minister of MSME Nitin Gadkari has approved this unique employment generation program proposed by Khadi and Village Industries Commission (KVIC). This scheme of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises will make India self-reliant in the production of incense sticks.

As stated by the Ministry of MSME, KVIC has prepared Khadi Agarbatti Atmanirbhar Mission (KAAM) scheme on Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode. The KAAM mission will require very little investment to create sustainable employment. Khadi Agarbatti Atmanirbhar Mission Scheme will help the private agarbatti manufacturers to increase the agarbatti production without any capital investment by them. As part of Khadi Agarbatti Atmanirbhar Mission scheme, KVIC will provide automatic agarbatti making machine and powder mixing machine to the artisans. This will be done through private agarbatti manufacturers who will sign the agreement as business partners.

Objectives of Khadi Agarbatti Atmanirbhar Mission

The objective of this KAAM program is to generate employment for unemployed and migrant workers by substantially increasing domestic incense sticks production. KVIC had submitted KAAM to Ministry of MSME for approval in July 2020 and the project was approved on 2nd August 2020. Soon KVIC’s Khadi Agarbatti Atmanirbhar Mission (KAAM) pilot project will be launched soon for the entire country. KAAM Scheme Features

To reduce unemployment in the country as well as to make the service sector of the country even stronger, there are some features of this scheme, some of which are as follows:

  • To create continuous and sustainable employment opportunities in rural and urban areas of the country
  • Through the establishment of micro-enterprises, a large section of the rural and urban unemployed youth, traditional and prospective artisans, in the country will get continuous and permanent employment.

  • The primary objective of the scheme is to increase the wage earning capacity of the artisans and increase the employment rate.

How much will be earned from Khadi Agarbatti Atmanirbhar Mission

With the current job work rate, people can get Rs 15 per kg for making incense sticks. Thus, 4 artisans working on an automatic incense sticks machine can make a minimum of Rs 1200 per day by making 80 kg incense sticks. This means that every artisan can earn Rs 300 per day. Even working on a powder mixing machine, every artisan can get an amount of Rs 250 per day. Under Khadi Agarbatti Aatmanirbhar Mission, the wages of artisans will be provided by the business partners on weekly basis directly into their accounts through DBT only.

The supply of raw materials for the craftsmanship, logistics, quality control and marketing of the final product shall be the sole responsibility of the business partner. The ownership of the machines will automatically be transferred to the artisans after recovery of 75% of the cost.

Many people will get employment under the scheme

Each automatic agarbatti making machine makes around 80 kg incense sticks per day which will provide direct employment to 4 persons. Central government decided to procure only locally manufactured machines by Indian manufacturers under Khadi Agarbatti Aatmanirbhar Mission 2021-22 Is. KVIC will give 25% subsidy on the cost of the machines. It will recover the remaining 75% of the cost from the artisans in easy installments every month.

The raw material for producing incense sticks would be provided by the trade partners to the artisans and they would pay wages to the workers on the basis of the work done. Even the cost of training the artisans will be shared between KVIC and the private business partner. For training the artisans, KVIC will bear 75% of the cost, while 25% will be paid by the business partner.
