Belgium will recognize a Palestinian state at the UN general assembly this month. Foreign Minister Maxime Prévot announced this on 15 Mar 2024 in Brussels. He cited the humanitarian crisis in Gaza as the reason. Belgium will also impose 12 sanctions on Israel. These include banning products from Israeli settlements. The country will review its policies with Israeli companies too. Belgium will only formalize this if Hamas releases all Israeli hostages. Hamas must also stop managing Palestine. Two Israeli ministers and some settlers will be banned from entering Belgium. This move adds to pressure on Israel from other countries like Australia and France.
