On 27 Aug 2025, Baltasar Ebang Engonga, nephew of Equatorial Guinea's President Teodoro Obiang Nguema, was sentenced to eight years in prison for embezzlement. Engonga, former head of the National Financial Investigation Agency, was found guilty of diverting public funds meant for official travel for personal use. The Bioko provincial tribunal also fined him $220,000. Engonga was tried along with five other senior officials accused of similar crimes. Last year, he became widely known after explicit videos involving him and women linked to powerful figures were leaked while he was in detention. The videos damaged his reputation and led to his suspension. Engonga's uncle has been president since 1979 and has appointed his son as vice-president. To avoid such crimes, officials should ensure transparency and proper auditing of public funds. (Updated 28 Aug 2025, 17:13 IST; source: link)
