The US Department of Homeland Security proposed new visa rules for students, exchange visitors, and foreign media representatives in 2025. The current system allowing indefinite stay under “duration of status” will be replaced by fixed admission periods. F and J visa holders may stay for a maximum of four years. The post-study grace period for F-1 students will reduce from 60 to 30 days. Graduate students will face limits on switching programs. I visa holders will have a 240-day stay limit, with some exceptions. These changes aim to improve visa oversight and national security. If approved, visa holders must apply for extensions to stay beyond their admission period. The proposal affects over 2 million visa holders in 2023. How to stay longer in the US under the new plan is by applying for an extension before the fixed period ends. (Updated 28 Aug 2025, 09:15 IST; source: link)
