On 25 Aug 2025, the US imposed 50% tariffs on Indian exports amid stalled trade talks. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said both countries want to resolve issues and keep communication open. He noted the US has the upper hand but expects a deal by May or June 2026. India continues buying Russian oil, which the US criticizes. India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said buyers can choose not to buy Indian oil if they dislike it. The Indian government has no hope for immediate tariff relief but plans financial help for exporters and encourages them to explore markets like China, Latin America, and the Middle East. Nearly 50 countries are targeted to boost exports of textiles, food, leather, and marine products. (Updated 28 Aug 2025, 06:31 IST; source: link)
