Denmark Apologizes for Forced Contraception in Greenland
Saralnama

Denmark's Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen apologized on 27 Aug 2025 for the forced contraception of around 4,500 Inuit women in Greenland from the 1960s to 1992. Many women, some as young as 12, were fitted with contraceptive coils without consent to reduce population growth. The campaign caused physical and psychological harm, and some women became sterile. A group of 143 women has sued Denmark for compensation. Greenland's government also acknowledged its role and welcomed the apology, though it said it came late. An investigation into the case will release its findings soon. The apology aims to take responsibility and help prevent such abuses in the future. (Updated 28 Aug 2025, 02:20 IST; source: link)
