Mitch Brown, a former West Coast Eagles player, has become the first openly bisexual man in the Australian Football League's 129-year history. He played 94 matches from 2007 to 2016. Brown said hiding his sexuality affected his career and hopes his announcement helps others feel safe to come out. He spoke about facing homophobic comments and a culture of hyper-masculinity in the AFL. Brown is currently with a female partner and has two sons. His announcement follows recent homophobic incidents in the league. Brown wants the AFL to support positive role models and believes some players are still not open about their sexuality. He encouraged fans to show empathy and told closeted players, "You are not alone." (Updated 27 Aug 2025, 13:13 IST; source: link)
