Brazil's former president Jair Bolsonaro was placed under 24-hour police watch on 26 Aug 2025. A judge declared him a flight risk while he awaits the verdict in his coup-plotting trial. Bolsonaro faces up to 40 years in prison if convicted of trying to stay in power after losing the 2022 election to Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva. The court ordered full-time surveillance after prosecutors revealed Bolsonaro had drafted an asylum request to Argentina last year. The trial verdict is expected early next month. Bolsonaro denies wrongdoing and claims the trial is politically motivated. His son Eduardo has lobbied in the US for support. The increased security aims to prevent Bolsonaro from fleeing but should not disturb his daily life or neighbours. (Updated 27 Aug 2025, 09:10 IST; source: link)
