US Imposes 50% Tariff on Indian Goods from 27 Aug 2025

From 27 Aug 2025, the US will charge 50% tariffs on most Indian exports. This doubles the earlier 25% duty. The higher tariff targets Indian goods because India buys Russian oil, which the US opposes. The new duty affects sectors like textiles, gems, seafood, steel, and leather. About half of India’s exports to the US, worth $87.3 billion, face this tariff. Some products like medicines and electronics are exempt. The Indian government says it expects no immediate relief but plans to help exporters financially. It also encourages exporters to explore other markets like China and the Middle East. The tariff starts at 9 am IST on 27 Aug, as per the US Department of Homeland Security. (Updated 27 Aug 2025, 08:05 IST; source: link)
