Two police officers were shot dead and another injured on 26 Aug 2025 in Porepunkah, Victoria. Ten officers were serving a search warrant when the suspect, Dezi Freeman, opened fire and fled into the bushland. Police say Freeman knows the area well and likely took all firearms with him. A large manhunt is underway, with officers warning of possible traps. The injured officer is stable after surgery. Tributes have been paid to the fallen officers, aged 59 and 35.
