On 23 June 2025, Israel attacked Evin Prison in Tehran, Iran, causing the deadliest strike in the Iran-Israel conflict. The attack killed about 80 people, including prisoners, prison staff, visitors, doctors, nurses, social workers, and nearby residents. The prison was hit during visiting hours, damaging many buildings such as the clinic and cells. Survivors described explosions and smoke, with guards initially blocking escape. Some prisoners helped injured guards and medical staff. Human Rights Watch and Amnesty International called the strike an apparent war crime, saying it targeted a civilian place without clear military reason. Israel said the prison was used for intelligence against it. Iranian authorities reported some prisoners fled during the chaos, but many were recaptured. The fate of transgender prisoners remains unknown. The attack raised serious concerns about violations of international law and the safety of detainees after the strike.
