Australia expelled Iran’s ambassador on 26 Aug 2025 after finding Iran’s Revolutionary Guard directed two antisemitic attacks. One attack was a firebombing of a kosher deli in Sydney in October 2024. The other targeted a synagogue in Melbourne in December 2024. Australian officials said Iran used intermediaries called “cut-outs” to hide its role. The attackers likely did not know Iran was behind the attacks. Prime Minister Albanese called these acts dangerous aggression on Australian soil. Australia also moved its diplomats from Iran and warned Australians there about risks. This is Australia’s first expulsion of a foreign ambassador since World War II.
