Kosovo Elects New Parliament Speaker Ending Six-Month Deadlock

Kosovo Elects New Parliament Speaker Ending Six-Month Deadlock
Saralnama

Kosovo's parliament elected Dimal Basha as the new speaker on 26 Aug 2025. This ended a six-month deadlock after the February election. Basha is from the ruling Vetevendosje party. The parliament had voted over 50 times before agreeing. Now, Prime Minister Albin Kurti has two weeks to form a government with other parties. If no deal is reached, the president will ask others to try or call new elections. The deadlock had blocked government formation and showed deep divisions in Kosovo. Basha called for unity and cooperation among parties. The vote also included electing deputy speakers, but some issues remain, especially with the Serb minority's representation. This step clears the way for Kosovo to move forward politically after months of crisis. (Updated 27 Aug 2025, 00:31 IST; source: link)
