Russia has proposed a six-month extension to delay the reimposition of UN nuclear sanctions on Iran. The draft resolution aims to postpone sanctions snapback until April 2026. Britain, France, and Germany want sanctions restored by end of August if Iran does not resume nuclear talks and inspections. Iran met European officials in Geneva to discuss conditions for extension. Iran’s Supreme Leader rejected direct talks with the US but left room for indirect talks. The snapback mechanism is linked to the 2015 nuclear deal, which expires in October 2025. Russia’s move seeks to allow more time for diplomacy before sanctions return. (Updated 26 Aug 2025, 23:20 IST; source: link)
