India Alerts Pakistan About Potential Flood In Tawi River Amid IWT Suspension
Saralnama

India has alerted Pakistan about a potential flood in the Tawi River, marking the first major contact between the two countries since the military conflict in May. The Indian High Commission in Islamabad conveyed the alert on August 24, prompting Pakistani authorities to issue warnings. This communication occurred despite the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) being in abeyance following the Pahalgam terror attack in April, after which India suspended the treaty as a punitive measure. The IWT, brokered by the World Bank in 1960, governs the sharing of the Indus River and its tributaries between India and Pakistan. India has stated the treaty will remain suspended until Pakistan takes credible steps against terrorism. Pakistan has warned that any attempt to stop or divert water flow would be considered an act of war. Meanwhile, Pakistan’s National Disaster Management Authority has issued warnings of heavy rains until August 30, following monsoon spells that caused significant casualties earlier this season.
