12mm of rain in August triggered a rare wildflower bloom in Chile's Atacama desert. The usually dry landscape now displays a colorful carpet of over 200 flower species. Some of these plants grow nowhere else on Earth. The Atacama normally gets less than 15mm rain yearly. This bloom happens every few years when extra rain wakes dormant seeds. CONAF says the flowers will peak for a few more weeks. Visitors can see this special event between August and November. The desert also had snow in June. The Atacama is known for its clear night skies and the world's largest radio telescope. (Updated 11 Oct 2025, 09:36 IST; source: link)
