Australia expelled the Iranian ambassador on 26 Aug 2025. The government said Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) directed arson attacks on a Melbourne synagogue and a Sydney Jewish restaurant last year. The attacks aimed to spread antisemitism. Australia listed the IRGC as a terrorist organisation. The Iranian embassy in Canberra was closed, and four Iranian diplomats must leave within seven days. Australia’s spy chief said Iran used secret networks to plan these attacks. No injuries were reported. The prime minister called these acts dangerous and said Australia will take strong action. Iranian diplomats were not involved, but Iran’s government likely ordered the attacks. Australians are advised not to travel to Iran.
