UN Supports Morocco’s Western Sahara Autonomy Plan
Saralnama

The UN Security Council voted in favor of Morocco’s plan to give Western Sahara autonomy under Moroccan rule. This decision came on 31 October 2025 and was supported by 11 members, with three abstentions. The resolution calls for talks based on Morocco’s autonomy proposal to find a peaceful solution to the 50-year conflict. Morocco controls most of Western Sahara, but the Polisario Front, backed by Algeria, wants independence. Morocco’s King Mohammed VI called the UN vote historic. The UN mission in Western Sahara will continue until October 2026 to support peace efforts. Algeria did not vote and opposed the plan. The UN hopes the parties will negotiate without preconditions for a lasting peace. (Updated 2 Nov 2025, 19:57 IST; source: link)
