Munich Oktoberfest Reopens After Bomb Threat, House Fire

Munich’s Oktoberfest will reopen at 17 on Wednesday after police closed it for most of the day due to a bomb threat linked to a house fire in the city’s north. A 57-year-old man, suspected of starting the fire during a family dispute, was later found dead at a nearby lake with a backpack that may have contained explosives. Police found a letter from the suspect with a bomb threat against Oktoberfest, prompting a search of the festival site by explosives experts and sniffer dogs. The fire in Lerchenau, northern Munich, also led to a large emergency response after explosions were reported early Wednesday; nearby cars burned, and special forces removed booby traps from the house. The suspect’s 81-year-old mother and 21-year-old daughter were injured and are in hospital. Police say there is no current danger at other locations in Munich. Oktoberfest, running from 20 September to 5 October, is the world’s largest folk and beer festival and has already welcomed over 3.5 million visitors this year.
