Harry Potter star Miriam Margolyes spoke about assisted dying in a recent interview. The 84-year-old actress, known for playing Professor Sprout, said she would prefer to be 'put down' than suffer a long decline in health. She has spinal stenosis, a condition that narrows the spinal canal and causes pain and weakness. Due to this and weight problems, she now uses a walker and cannot exercise. Margolyes expressed regret for not taking better care of her body. She also refused to take a diabetes drug called Ozempic for weight loss. Assisted dying is illegal in the UK, but a bill to legalize it for terminally ill people was voted on in June. Margolyes said she does not want to live with severe disabilities or pain and would ask for assisted dying if she lost her mind or control over her body. (Updated 27 Aug 2025, 04:42 IST; source: link)
