Uttarakhand Weather: Yellow Alert for Heavy Rain in Dehradun and Four Other Districts, Alaknanda Flowing Above Danger Mark

Noida, 23 August 2024  – The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in Dehradun and four other districts of Uttarakhand, warning residents to brace for potentially severe weather conditions. The alert, issued on Today, comes as the Alaknanda River is reported to be flowing above the danger mark, raising concerns about possible flooding and landslides in vulnerable areas.

Districts Under Alert

The yellow alert has been issued for the districts of Dehradun, Nainital, Pauri Garhwal, Tehri Garhwal, and Champawat. These regions are expected to experience intense rainfall over the next 24 to 48 hours, which could lead to disruptions in daily life and pose risks to safety. The IMD has advised residents to stay indoors as much as possible and avoid traveling to areas prone to landslides and flash floods.

Alaknanda River: A Cause for Concern

One of the major concerns is the rising water level of the Alaknanda River, which is flowing above the danger mark in several areas. Authorities have been closely monitoring the situation, particularly in the Chamoli and Rudraprayag districts, where the river’s swollen state poses a significant threat to nearby settlements.

Local disaster management teams have been put on high alert, with evacuation plans in place for communities located near the riverbanks. “We are prepared to act swiftly in case the situation deteriorates. Residents in low-lying areas should remain vigilant and follow official advisories,” said, an official from the Uttarakhand Disaster Management Authority.

Impact on Transportation and Infrastructure

Heavy rainfall in the region has already led to waterlogging in several parts of Dehradun, causing traffic disruptions and damage to infrastructure. The authorities have warned that continued rain could result in further road blockages due to landslides, particularly in the hilly areas of Garhwal and Kumaon.

The state government has urged people to avoid unnecessary travel and has directed district administrations to be prepared for emergency situations. “Our priority is to ensure the safety of the citizens. We are coordinating with various agencies to respond to any incidents that may arise due to the heavy rains,” say Chief Minister of Uttarakhand.

Precautions and Advisories

The IMD and local authorities have issued several precautions for residents in the affected districts:

  • Avoid venturing out unless absolutely necessary.
  • Stay away from riverbanks and areas prone to landslides.
  • Keep emergency kits ready, including essential supplies and important documents.
  • Follow weather updates and advisories from official channels.

Additionally, tourists have been advised to postpone or cancel travel plans to the affected districts, as the weather conditions are likely to disrupt transport and increase the risk of accidents.
