Noida 13 August 2024: The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is currently engaged in a search operation for a woman and a young girl who were swept away by the strong current of the Bhagirathi River in Uttarakhand. The incident occurred when the two were taking a ritual dip at the Devprayag Sangam, where the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers converge to form the Ganga.
NDRF Response
The NDRF has deployed a 22-member team from Dehradun to Devprayag to search for the missing individuals. The team, led by NDRF deputy commandant Ravi Sharma, has started a search operation downstream, but they have not been able to recover the victims so far.
Cause of Strong Water Flow
The strong water flow in the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers is attributed to recent heavy rains in the higher reaches of Uttarakhand. The NDRF, along with the district disaster management team and police, are working tirelessly to locate the missing woman and young girl.
NDRF’s Experience in Search and Rescue
The NDRF has extensive experience in conducting search and rescue operations in flood-affected areas. In the past, they have recovered numerous bodies from the Bhagirathi River during similar incidents.
Caution for the Public
As the search operation continues, the authorities urge the public to exercise caution and avoid venturing into the river, especially during the monsoon season when water levels are high and currents are strong.
