Following a World Health Organization report labeling Karnataka-grown areca nut as carcinogenic, the Indian central government has directed ICAR scientists to conduct a study and submit a report within a set timeframe. Agriculture Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan stated that the WHO report has caused widespread concern among farmers and traders. He emphasized that areca nut is deeply rooted in India's cultural and religious traditions and is also used in Ayurveda and veterinary medicine. The government held a high-level meeting discussing issues such as illegal imports, moisture challenges, price disparities, and seed quality. Karnataka accounts for 10 lakh tons of the approximately 14 lakh tons of areca nut produced in India annually, cultivated over 6.76 lakh hectares. Around 60 lakh people depend on areca nut farming and related businesses, with the crop's market value estimated at ₹58,664 crore. The government plans to provide compensation to farmers affected by viral diseases in areca nut crops and will conduct scientific demonstrations in Karnataka from 2024 to 2027 with a budget of ₹6.31 crore. A team including ministers and MPs participated in the meeting, and a field visit to Karnataka is planned to assess conditions and develop growth strategies.
