The Assam Police registered an FIR against journalist and YouTuber Abhisar Sharma on Thursday following a complaint by Alok Baruah, a member of the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad, for allegedly accusing Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma of communal politics. The Guwahati Crime Branch filed the case under sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita related to acts endangering national unity, promoting enmity between groups, and prejudicial assertions to national integration. Baruah alleged Sharma ridiculed the Union and Assam governments, including mocking the principle of Ram Rajya, and claimed Sarma’s politics was based on Hindu-Muslim polarization. The complaint stated Sharma’s remarks could provoke disorder and undermine the state’s legitimacy. A senior police officer said the case was filed because Sharma was speaking against the country’s sovereignty. Sharma had accused Sarma of spreading religious hatred and running a propaganda campaign against Muslims and madrasas. This FIR follows recent summons issued to other journalists by the Guwahati Crime Branch in related cases. The police continue to investigate the matter. (Updated 22 Aug 2025, 00:10 IST; source: link)
