Son of Norway Crown Princess Charged With Multiple Offenses Including Rape

Marius Borg Hoiby, son of Norway's Crown Princess Mette-Marit, has been charged with 32 offenses including four counts of rape, domestic abuse, violence, assault, vandalism, and violating restraining orders, prosecutors announced on August 18, 2025. The charges stem from incidents occurring between 2018 and 2024, with the last alleged rape taking place after police began investigating him. Hoiby was arrested on August 4, 2024, initially for assaulting a girlfriend and has admitted to assault and vandalism related to that incident. Prosecutor Sturla Henriksbo emphasized that Hoiby’s royal status should not affect the legal process. The maximum penalty for the charges is up to 10 years in prison. Hoiby, born before Crown Princess Mette-Marit's marriage to Crown Prince Haakon, was raised alongside his step-siblings but holds no official public role. He has publicly acknowledged struggles with substance abuse and mental health issues following his arrest. (Updated 18 Aug 2025, 21:06 IST; source: link)
