On 27 Aug 2025, AI company Anthropic settled a class action lawsuit filed by U.S. authors who accused it of copyright infringement. The authors claimed Anthropic illegally downloaded up to 7 million pirated books to train its AI assistant Claude. A California judge ruled in June that while Anthropic’s AI training was fair use, saving pirated books in a central library violated copyright. The settlement ends the case before a trial scheduled for 1 Dec 2025. The settlement terms remain undisclosed but will benefit all class members, said the authors' lawyer. This is the first major AI copyright lawsuit settlement in the U.S. and may influence future cases against AI firms using copyrighted works without permission.
