On 26 Aug 2025, AI company Anthropic settled a class action lawsuit filed by U.S. authors. The authors claimed Anthropic used about 7 million pirated books without permission to train its AI assistant, Claude. A California judge had ruled Anthropic may have broken copyright laws by saving these books in a central library. The case could have led to billions in damages. Anthropic and the authors agreed to settle before a trial set for December. The settlement details are not yet public. This is the first major settlement in several similar AI copyright cases in the U.S. The authors’ lawyer said the settlement will benefit all members of the class. Anthropic is backed by Amazon and Alphabet. The case raised important questions about how AI companies use copyrighted material for training their systems.
