Israeli airstrikes on Yemen’s capital, Sanaa, on August 24 killed at least six people and wounded 86, targeting a military compound including the presidential palace, a fuel depot, and two power stations, causing large fires and smoke. The strikes were a response to missile and drone attacks by Iran-backed Houthi rebels on Israel and Red Sea shipping over nearly two years. Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu vowed to intensify operations against the Houthis, warning of heavy consequences. Defence Minister Israel Katz stated the strikes destroyed key Houthi infrastructure used to promote terrorism. The escalation followed an Israeli investigation revealing the Houthis’ use of a cluster bomb warhead missile for the first time in an attack on August 22. Israeli officials noted cluster munitions are harder to intercept and represent new technology supplied by Iran. This was Israel’s first strike on Sanaa since August 17, when energy facilities linked to the Houthis were targeted. The Houthis claim their attacks support Palestinians amid the Gaza conflict. Most projectiles fired at Israel have been intercepted, but the use of cluster munitions signals a dangerous escalation in the conflict. (Updated 25 Aug 2025, 12:40 IST; source: link)
