Landslide Hits North Sikkim Highway, Tourist Permits for Lachung Halted

North Sikkim, June 1, 2024 – Due to the heavy rains, a landslide occurred and the traffic on the North Sikkim highway was disrupted affecting the daily life. Currently, the Gangtok-Mangan road via Tashi viewpoint is closed. Impact of Cyclone Remal Cyclone remal resulted in the road from Chungthang to Lachung blocking in several locations including Maltin and BOP areas. The tourist permit for Lachung visit was suspended until the further instruction.

Effect on Flights The scheduled flights from Pakyong to Kolkata, Kolkata to Pakyong and Pakyong to Delhi are expected to be affected due to the bad weather. The passenger should monitor the latest flight status and schedule at the respective airline websites.

Water Supply of Pakyong Disrupted A landslide has disrupted the water channel to Pakyong. Considering the telephonic instruction of DC Pakyong, the team visited the Dhungelkharka area to monitor the steps taken by NHIDCL towards the mitigation of the disaster.

Visit of the Team To oversee the situation, the team of PHED Pakyong consisting of the Assistant Engineer along with the important officials of the district visited the area.

The members observed that the steps taken to divert rainwater to the Richu source of Pakyong Water Supply were inefficient. It is essential to take further steps to ensure a proper water supply for the Pakyong residents.
