As Hyderabad Metro’s Phase-II project progresses, the proposal to extend the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) line from Umdanagar to Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) has resurfaced as a cost-effective solution to improve airport connectivity. Initially planned under MMTS Phase-II by South Central Railway (SCR), the project stalled due to GMR authorities offering only three kilometers of land instead of the six kilometers required, making the Rs 85 crore proposal unviable. Despite multiple discussions involving SCR, the state government, and GMR, the plan was shelved. Currently, Umdanagar station serves as a key transit point with 22 daily MMTS services and handles 1,800 to 2,000 passengers daily. The station is undergoing a Rs 12.37 crore upgrade under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme to enhance facilities. Railway unions have renewed calls for a dedicated rail link to the airport, citing examples like Delhi’s electrified rail access, which offers an affordable and eco-friendly alternative to road transport and better integration with public transit.
