TMC Declines to Join JPC on Bills to Remove PM, CMs Amid Opposition Protests
Saralnama

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) announced on August 23, 2025, that it will not nominate any members to the Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) formed to examine three bills concerning the removal of the Prime Minister, chief ministers, and ministers arrested for 30 consecutive days on serious charges. The bills under review include the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025, the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill 2025, and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025, all introduced in the Lok Sabha by Home Minister Amit Shah earlier that week. TMC described the JPC as a “farce” and opposed the 130th Constitution Amendment Bill at the stage of introduction. Derek O’Brien, TMC’s Rajya Sabha leader, criticized the government for using JPCs as political stunts and highlighted the lack of consensus and opposition influence within such committees. The bills were referred to the JPC amid protests and disruptions in Parliament, with TMC MPs actively opposing their introduction. Other opposition parties, including the Samajwadi Party, also decided not to participate in the JPC, while the Congress party indicated it might join the committee to oppose the bills. The JPC is expected to submit its report during the Winter Session later in the year. (Updated 24 Aug 2025, 12:57 IST; source: link)
