Mumbai Police Inspector Loses Rs 2.99 Lakh in Cyber Fraud via Fake App

A Mumbai Police inspector, Mohammad Shafiq Bagwan, lost Rs 2.99 lakh after downloading a malicious APK named “RTO Chalan” shared in a WhatsApp group. The incident occurred on August 18, when Bagwan, believing the app contained important information, entered personal details but exited before providing banking information. Despite uninstalling the app, cybercriminals accessed his phone and siphoned Rs 1,99,700 from his Axis Bank account and Rs 99,900 from his Bank of Baroda account. The case was reported to Tardeo Police Station, where an FIR was registered under the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita and Information Technology Act. The police are investigating to identify the perpetrators and recover the stolen funds.
