A 21-year-old final year BBA student from Kanpur, Vaishnavi Sahu, was attacked by three stray dogs in Shyam Nagar on August 20, resulting in multiple injuries including a torn right cheek that required 17 stitches. Eyewitnesses reported the dogs were agitated after a scuffle with monkeys before attacking Vaishnavi, who was dragged to the ground and bitten on her face and body. She also sustained wounds on her neck and nose and currently cannot eat or move her mouth properly, with family members feeding her liquids through a straw. Her uncle called on the government to take responsibility for managing stray dogs, either by sheltering or removing them from streets. The incident has raised local concerns about increasing stray dog attacks. On August 22, the Supreme Court of India modified a previous order, allowing sterilized dogs to be re-released and mandating designated feeding zones, following opposition to an earlier directive to capture and relocate stray dogs to shelters.
