Lok Sabha Monsoon Session 2025 Ends With Record Disruptions, 12 Bills Passed

The Lok Sabha Monsoon Session 2025 concluded after 21 sittings from July 21 to August 21, with only 37 hours of effective work out of the scheduled 120 hours due to repeated disruptions and adjournments, resulting in over 84 hours lost—the highest in the 18th Lok Sabha. Despite the disruptions, the government introduced 14 bills and passed 12 key legislations, including the Promotion and Regulation of Online Gaming Bill, the Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Bill, and the National Sports Governance Bill, all considered significant for various sectors. The session saw intense opposition protests, especially on August 20, when three bills were introduced that included provisions for removal of Prime Minister, Chief Ministers, or ministers if jailed for serious offenses for 30 days. No private members’ bills were discussed or passed. Parliamentary questions and notices faced heavy restrictions, with only 55 of 419 starred questions receiving oral answers. Speaker Om Birla expressed regret over the lost time and disruptions, while Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju described the session as productive for the government despite opposition resistance. The Rajya Sabha also witnessed disruptions but passed 14 bills during the session. (Updated 22 Aug 2025, 02:24 IST; source: link)
