NDA candidate CP Radhakrishnan will file his nomination for the Vice President of India election on August 20, accompanied by around 160 supporters including 20 proposers and 20 seconders. The election is scheduled for September 9, with counting on the same day. Radhakrishnan, Maharashtra Governor and veteran BJP leader from Tamil Nadu, was unanimously nominated by the BJP parliamentary board on August 17. His opponent is retired Supreme Court Justice B. Sudarshan Reddy, the opposition candidate from Andhra Pradesh, who will file his nomination on August 21. The election follows the resignation of Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar on July 21, whose term was to end in 2027. The NDA holds a majority in Parliament, with 422 supporting members out of 787 total, surpassing the 391 needed for a majority. Prime Minister Narendra Modi has praised Radhakrishnan as a simple and straightforward person and appealed for consensus across parties. The last date for nomination withdrawal is August 25. Both candidates hail from southern India, with Radhakrishnan from Tamil Nadu and Reddy from Andhra Pradesh. (Updated 20 Aug 2025, 06:33 IST; source: link)
