India and China held a series of meetings involving Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar, National Security Advisor Ajit Doval, and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, addressing cross-border terrorism, mega dam construction on the Brahmaputra, and Taiwan. India reaffirmed its unchanged position on Taiwan, emphasizing economic, technological, and cultural ties without recognizing Chinese claims. The Indian side strongly raised concerns about terrorism, linking it to Pakistan, while China agreed on prioritizing counter-terrorism efforts. India also expressed concerns over China’s mega dam projects on the Yarlung Tsangpo (Brahmaputra), urging transparency due to downstream impacts. PM Modi confirmed his visit to China for the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit in Tianjin from August 31 to September 1, expressing support for China’s SCO presidency and the importance of stable bilateral ties for regional peace. NSA Ajit Doval highlighted improved India-China relations marked by peace and tranquility along the Line of Actual Control, with progress in border disengagement at multiple friction points since 2024. The meetings are part of ongoing efforts to recalibrate ties following the 2020 Galwan clashes, with both sides aiming for constructive engagement and cooperation.
