PM Modi Conducts Aerial Survey of Wayanad Landslide-Affected Areas

Noida, 10 August 2024: Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited the landslide-ravaged Wayanad district in Kerala on Saturday, August 10, 2024, to assess the damage and ongoing relief efforts. Here are the key updates from his visit:

Aerial Survey of Disaster Zones

PM Modi undertook an aerial survey of the worst-hit areas of Chooralmala, Mundakkai, and Punchirimattom aboard an Indian Air Force helicopter. He departed from Kannur Airport around 11:15 am to survey the landslide-affected regions.

Meeting with Rescue Teams and Survivors

After the aerial survey, PM Modi landed at the SKMJ Higher Secondary School in Kalpetta. He then proceeded to visit certain landslide-hit areas by road.

In Wayanad, the Prime Minister received updates from rescue teams regarding the ongoing evacuation operations. He also visited a relief camp and a hospital to interact with the victims and survivors of the landslides.

Rahul Gandhi Welcomes PM’s Visit

Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, appreciated PM Modi’s visit to Wayanad. He expressed confidence that the Prime Minister would declare the tragedy a national disaster after seeing the extent of the devastation firsthand.

Review Meeting and Rehabilitation Plans

Following his visit, PM Modi chaired a review meeting to receive a detailed briefing on the disaster and the ongoing relief efforts. The Kerala government has requested Rs 2,000 crore in aid for rehabilitation and relief in the affected region.

Landslide Toll and Ongoing Search

The landslides, which occurred on July 30, have resulted in at least 226 deaths, with many others still missing. The search for bodies of missing people continues, with rescue teams retrieving seven body parts during the ongoing operations.

PM Modi’s visit aims to provide support and assess the ground situation as the state grapples with one of the most severe natural disasters in recent history.
