South Florida Flood Relief Efforts Underway as Weather Improves

After several days of heavy rain, the weather in South Florida began to improve on Thursday evening. However, many neighborhoods are still dealing with standing water.

Affected Areas and Additional Rainfall

Doppler radar indicated that thunderstorms had brought heavy rain to areas such as Hallandale, Dania Beach, Hollywood, and Fort Lauderdale. Additionally, forecasters predicted an extra 3 to 6 inches of rainfall in regions including Fort Lauderdale, Pembroke Pines, Hollywood, Miramar, Coral Springs, Pompano Beach, and many others. Authorities advised drivers to steer clear of flooded roads, emphasizing that most flood-related fatalities occur in vehicles.

Flight Delays and Cancellations

Miami International Airport (MIA) and Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport faced significant disruptions for the second consecutive day due to heavy rain and flooding. By 3 p.m. on Thursday, MIA reported 284 canceled flights and 132 delayed flights, while Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood had 235 delays and 143 cancellations.

Travel Chaos for Passengers

Passengers struggled with the weather-related disruptions. Bill Carlisle, a Navy petty officer, recounted his arduous journey to catch a flight. He arrived at MIA early in the morning but was unable to make his flight due to lengthy lines. After booking another flight from Fort Lauderdale, he discovered it was also canceled and had to return to Miami for a later flight, hoping it wouldn’t be canceled as well.

CBS News Miami meteorologist Cindy Preszler noted that the probability of rain on Father’s Day Sunday is only 30 percent, bringing relief to residents planning outdoor activities.
