The second part of the Mumbai Coastal Road opened for traffic on June 10th. This is a big improvement for the city’s transportation system. Chief Minister Eknath Shinde officially started the project.
The second phase of the Coastal Road, connecting Worli to Marine Drive, is now open. This 10.5 kilometer stretch features four lanes in each direction and includes a bridge, elevated road, and tunnels. It should cut travel times by 70% and ease congestion between south Mumbai and the western suburbs.
As of now, the north-bound carriageway from Marine Drive to Haji Ali has started and will be operational from 7 AM to 11 PM while work continues to connect it to the Bandra-Worli Sea Link, which is expected to be completed by October 2024. However, controversies have emerged regarding delays and leakage issues in the southbound tunnel. The construction cost for the first phase of the project is approximately ₹13,984 crore.The Mumbai Coastal Road Project, also known as Dharmveer Swarajya Rakshak Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj Coastal Road, aims to enhance connectivity and promote the development of Mumbai’s real estate market by creating a coastal route in areas such as Kandivali, Dahisar, Mira Road, and Goregaon. These areas have already seen a 10-15% increase in property prices since the project’s announcement.The project, which spans 10.58 km from Worli to Marine Drive, was constructed by the BMC and inaugurated by the SM of Mumbai. Following a two-day review, traffic on the Mumbai Coastal Road Project route appears to have been reduced. Initially, CM Eknath Shinde stated that the project would be fully finished by July 2023, but it is now expected to be completed by October 2024.
