Union Home Minister Amit Shah on Monday defended the Constitution (130th Amendment) Bill, 2025, rejecting opposition criticism and stating that no Prime Minister, Chief Minister, or minister should run the government from jail. He emphasized that if a leader is arrested or detained for 30 days on charges punishable by five or more years, they must resign, as per the bill introduced in Lok Sabha on August 20. Shah cited the example of former Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar’s resignation and his own past arrest in the Sohrabuddin Sheikh encounter case, from which he was acquitted, to underline the bill’s intent to uphold moral standards in public life. The bill has sparked opposition protests, who allege political motives, but the government insists it ensures accountability. Shah also addressed opposition protests in Parliament and defended the deployment of CISF marshals inside the House. The bill forms part of three legislative proposals introduced by the government aimed at political reform and integrity in governance. (Updated 25 Aug 2025, 12:26 IST; source: link)
