Congress Suspends Kerala MLA Rahul Mamkootathil Over Misconduct Allegations
Saralnama

The Congress party has suspended Palakkad MLA Rahul Mamkootathil from its primary membership for six months following multiple allegations of sexual misconduct and harassment by women and transgender individuals. Mamkootathil had earlier resigned as the Kerala Youth Congress president amid the controversy but continues to serve as an MLA. The suspension bars him from participating in party and legislative meetings. The decision was taken by the Kerala Pradesh Congress Committee after consultations with senior leaders, aiming to address the allegations while avoiding a by-election in Palakkad. The party has stated that if the allegations are found serious, no leniency will be shown. Opposition parties, including the BJP and CPI(M), have demanded his resignation, and protests have been held in Palakkad. Despite calls for his resignation, the Congress leadership has not asked him to step down from the assembly seat, citing the need for proof and political considerations. No police complaints have been filed against Mamkootathil so far. (Updated 25 Aug 2025, 12:01 IST; source: link)
