Dr Shruti Chandak, consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, explained that postpartum journeys vary greatly among new mothers. Using oils on the navel is a widespread tradition done for warmth, relaxation, or easing abdominal dryness. While the navel does not absorb nutrients directly, the practice offers self-care benefits during the adjustment period. The main advantages stem from gentle massage, slower breathing, and warmth, which can ease abdominal tightness. Oils also moisturise dry skin, common due to hormonal changes postpartum. However, patch testing is essential, especially with thicker oils like castor, which may irritate sensitive skin. Dr Chandak emphasized these remedies are safe if expectations remain realistic—they promote relaxation but cannot replace hydration, sleep, and proper nutrition essential for true recovery.
