Understanding the Risk and Prevention Strategies

2 min read

Nutritionist Amita Gadre recently highlighted a concerning trend among new mothers on social media. She reported encountering six cases of gallbladder stones in postpartum women within just one month. Hormonal shifts during the postpartum period play a significant role, slowing down the emptying of the gallbladder. Many women consume high-fat diets during recovery, which further elevates the risk. Additionally, rapid weight loss focused solely on cutting sugar while neglecting fibre and vegetables compounds the problem. Gadre emphasised the importance of balanced nutrition, adequate hydration, and gentle physical activity. Consultant Nisha from Motherhood Hospitals, Gurgaon, confirmed that gallbladder stones are common postpartum due to hormonal and metabolic changes. Elevated estrogen and progesterone levels affect gallbladder function, leading to bile stasis and increased cholesterol saturation. Symptoms include upper right abdominal pain, nausea, vomiting, and discomfort after fatty meals. However, some stones remain asymptomatic for years, potentially causing complications later.

Understanding the Risk and Prevention Strategies

Hormonal changes during and after pregnancy significantly impact gallbladder function. Elevated estrogen and progesterone levels slow bile emptying and increase cholesterol saturation, creating conditions favourable for stone formation. Rapid postpartum weight loss further alters bile composition, heightening risk. Many new mothers adopt diets heavy in ghee, butter, and oil, or consume excessive sweets, both of which contribute to gallstone development. Preventive measures include eating a balanced diet rich in fibre, fruits, and vegetables while avoiding very high-fat meals. Staying well-hydrated and maintaining gradual, healthy weight loss are crucial. Starting light walking and regular medical check-ups, including abdominal ultrasounds when recommended, enable early detection and timely treatment, ensuring better recovery and comfort for new mothers.
