‘Patients come after expensive full-body check-ups’: AIIMS orthopaedic surgeon —

2 min read

Many women experience persistent back and body pain that does not improve with regular medicines. Dr Dushyant Chouchan, an orthopaedic and sports injury surgeon at AIIMS Raipur, recently addressed this issue through a social media post. He noted that numerous patients spend large amounts on full-body health check-ups, only to receive normal reports that leave them confused about the next steps. Instead of expensive screenings, he recommends focusing on three specific tests that can identify the cause of about 95 per cent of generalized pain. These include checking Vitamin D3 and calcium levels, a complete blood count with iron profile, and a DEXA scan for women over 40 years. According to medical experts, women are particularly vulnerable to deficiencies due to biological and lifestyle factors. Early detection through targeted tests can help address underlying causes more effectively and economically.

Why These Three Tests Matter for Women

Dr Dushyant suggests that around 90 per cent of body, back, and bone pain can be addressed with three key tests. The first checks Vitamin D3 and calcium levels, the second is a complete blood count with iron profile, and the third is a DEXA scan for women over 40 to assess bone density. Dr Raju Vaishya, senior consultant orthopaedic surgeon at Indraprastha Apollo Hospitals, explains that nearly 80-90 per cent of musculoskeletal pain in women is linked to Vitamin D3 and calcium deficiency. Women face higher risk due to hormonal changes, especially after menopause when falling estrogen levels accelerate bone loss. Limited outdoor time, cultural clothing norms, excessive sunscreen use, pregnancy, and breastfeeding further deplete these nutrients, leading to weakened bones, diffuse aches, and fatigue.
