Akshay Kumar recently revealed that he spends only 15-20 minutes daily on social media, a sharp contrast to many who scroll for several hours. Speaking on India TV's Aap ki Adalat, he expressed concern about the health consequences of prolonged screen time, particularly its impact on the neck and spine. Kumar advised viewers to set timers to limit their usage, noting he has implemented this rule for his daughter as well. He also regretted that continuous device exposure has reduced outdoor play among children. Medical experts agree with his observations, pointing to a growing number of patients suffering from what is known as tech neck or text neck syndrome. This condition results from poor posture during device use, causing chronic pain and stiffness in the neck, shoulders, and back. Simple adjustments like holding phones at eye level and taking regular breaks can help prevent these issues.

Health Risks of Prolonged Screen Time

Dr Abhishek Vaish, an orthopaedic surgeon at Indraprastha Apollo Hospital, explained that limiting social media is crucial for both mental and physical health. He frequently encounters patients with cervical spine problems caused by tech neck, a condition arising from bending forward while scrolling. This posture significantly increases stress on neck muscles beyond their natural capacity, straining ligaments and discs over time. Symptoms include neck and shoulder stiffness, headaches, and back pain. Dr Abhishek recommends holding phones at eye level, taking regular breaks, and practicing neck stretching exercises. For those whose work requires constant device use, maintaining an ergonomic workspace is essential to reduce physical strain.
