Dr Holika Devikar, an aesthetic dental specialist and root canal expert at Plus Dental Clinic in Thane, explained that standard brushing reaches only 40 per cent of tooth surfaces. The remaining areas, especially tight spaces between teeth and along gumlines, need extra attention. She recommends several practices: Oil pulling using coconut or sesame oil for 5–10 minutes loosens plaque and improves gum health. Tongue cleaning removes biofilm that causes 80 per cent of bad breath bacteria. Flossing daily can reduce cavity risk by nearly 50 per cent annually. Rinsing after meals washes away acids, though waiting 45 minutes before mouthwash use protects enamel. These practices together strengthen gums and reduce cavities effectively.
