Blood Sugar Levels and Damage in Type 2 DiabetesSaralnama

126 mg/dL is the fasting glucose level where significant organ damage risk begins in type 2 diabetes, says Dr Pranav Ghody of Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central. Damage starts when blood sugar consistently exceeds normal ranges: fasting glucose over 100 mg/dL and post-meal over 140 mg/dL. HbA1c above 6.5% also indicates diabetes. High blood sugar can harm small blood vessels, leading to eye, kidney, and nerve damage. It also affects large vessels, increasing heart attack and stroke risks. Regular monitoring is crucial as damage develops silently over years. Occasional spikes don't cause permanent harm, but persistent elevation is dangerous. Dr Ghody advises maintaining target blood sugar levels, following a balanced diet, exercising regularly, and taking medications as prescribed. Regular check-ups and HbA1c tests every 3-6 months help track overall control. (Updated 28 Oct 2025, 13:24 IST; source: link)
