Heavy rains in Haryana's hills and plains have caused flooding in 11 districts due to rising water levels in the Yamuna, Ghaggar, Markanda, and Tangri rivers. The Hathnikund barrage on the Yamuna recorded a peak discharge of 3,31,653 cusecs, leading to the opening of all 18 gates and flooding in Yamunanagar's roads and villages. Authorities have advised residents near riverbanks to relocate to safer areas. Over 1,000 villages have reported crop submersion across 3,01,343 acres. Several districts including Yamunanagar, Panipat, Karnal, and Kurukshetra are under high flood alert, with some schools closed. The floodwaters have caused damage to homes, infrastructure, and power projects, and incidents of drowning have been reported. The Yamuna's swollen waters are expected to reach Delhi within 72 hours, potentially causing flood conditions there. The state government has canceled all official leaves until September 5 and ordered continuous monitoring by administrative and police officials. Drainage breaches and land erosion have been reported in multiple areas, and relief efforts are underway to manage the situation. (Updated 2 Sep 2025, 01:28 IST; source: link)
